About James Hayton, PhD

I’m James Hayton, I’m a former physicist and since 2010 I’ve worked full-time coaching PhD students from a huge range of academic fields in academic writing, project management and stress management skills.

So many PhD students suffer from overwhelming stress that many people assume it’s an inevitable and necessary part of the process; that you have to suffer in order to succeed. Of course a PhD is difficult (that’s part of the point), and some stress probably is inevitable or even useful, but constant, overwhelming stress is a sign that something is wrong.

My goal is to provide students with the knowledge and skills needed to produce better research and writing with much less stress, and maybe even to enjoy the process.

What I do:

My unique approach

While there’s a lot of advice online for PhD students, I’ve developed a unique approached based on my experience of more than a decade working with hundreds of PhD students from a huge range of disciplines.

I’m strongly influenced by the principles of skill development found in psychology and sports coaching, and also draw insights from sources on topics as diverse as business and meditation.

Check out these videos for examples of how I approach PhD some common PhD issues!

And if you like these two, this next one provides a deeper dive into my approach to PhDs in general…
